What a day..... For most of the flight I had no issues at all, and managed to fly 25kph faster than anyone else. However, there was a huge thunderstorm that I had to get through for the last control point. Pushed into the middle of it, rain and hail hammering into the glider, lightning flshing all around. Managed to lose 3000ft in 7km. Normally that would last for about 45km! Decided that I would need to land in a field as getting back through the storm was simply impossible. The only field available was so small that I wouldn't normally fly a kite in. Very gusty conditions so the approach was pretty tricky. the left wingtip almost clipped some braches, then the right nearly hit a slope. It was probably 1-2ft off the floor whilst the body was still 20ft up. That would have been nasty. Still, managed to get down safely. Had a few visitors after that, First the police helicopter arrived, did a few circuits but left when he saw a load of guys in bright jackets turn up. Presumably he thought that other emergency services appeared but they turned out to be guys from the Britvic factory that I had just flown over at 100ft. Sorted them out and they left and I thought it was all over but then another policeman arrived, shortly followed by half a dozen others. Eventually I had 2 squad cars, one 4X4 and a riot van to attend to me. To top it all, I then went to see the farmer, who had only been out of hospital for 1/2 an hour following an angina attack. Just great!
